Installing an SSL Certificate on a Google Cloud Load Balancer

Google Cloud treats an SSL Certificate as its own resource, created once and then referenced by the frontend of any load balancer that needs it. The platform expects the chain delivered inside the same upload as the SSL Certificate itself, which makes one preparation step the difference between a clean installation and mobile device warnings.

Prerequisites and Required Files

You need Google Cloud console access with permission to manage load balancing resources in the project. You also need your issued SSL Certificate, the ca-bundle of Intermediate Certificates from the Certificate Authority (CA), and the Private Key generated with your Certificate Signing Request (CSR), all in PEM format.

Building the Fullchain File

Google Cloud reads the chain from the SSL Certificate field of the upload, so concatenate the issued SSL Certificate and the ca-bundle first, with your own SSL Certificate at the top.

Creating the SSL Certificate Resource

In the console, navigate to Network Services and open Load balancing, then edit your load balancer and open its frontend configuration. Within the HTTPS frontend, choose to create a new SSL Certificate resource, select the upload option, and provide a recognizable resource name.

Paste the fullchain contents into the SSL Certificate field and the Private Key into its own field, then create the resource and save the frontend. The same resource can also be created ahead of time from the command line, which suits scripted deployments.

Global external load balancers use global resources as shown, while regional load balancers need the resource created in their own region with the region flag instead.

Attaching and Propagating

A resource created through the frontend editor attaches as part of saving. A resource created through the command line attaches by editing the frontend and selecting it from the list of existing SSL Certificate resources.

Google Cloud then propagates the SSL Certificate to its edge, which can take from several minutes up to a quarter of an hour on global load balancers. Connections during propagation may still receive the previous SSL Certificate, so a brief overlap is expected rather than a fault.

Tip : SSL Certificate resources are immutable on this platform. A replacement is uploaded as a new resource, attached to the frontend, and the old resource removed afterward. Naming resources with a date or version suffix keeps replacements tidy.

Propagation aside, confirmation works the same as on any platform.

Verifying the Installation

Troubleshooting Common Installation Problems

Chain warnings on mobile devices mean the bare SSL Certificate was uploaded without the ca-bundle. Build the fullchain file, upload it as a new resource, and swap the frontend over.
